Breakthrough Discovery Shows Crash Diets Can Make People Fatter.
March 10, 2004
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Janice Bowles, a therapeutic hypnotherapist and member of the Atkinson-Ball College of
Hypnotherapy cautions her weight loss clients not to lose weight too rapidly because
of a recently discovered hormone called Ghrelin that can sabotage the best dieter's
intentions.
According to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, ghrelin is
produced in the stomach cells to signal the brain when the body needs energy.
When ghrelin production increases, you get hunger pangs and your metabolism slows down,
burning fat at a lower rate.
Dr. David Cummings, of the University of Washington, explains "The rise of ghrelin as a
result of dieting is a part of the body's normal adaptive response to famine - the
body interprets dieting as starvation."
In other words, people who use crash diets, depriving themselves of needed caloric intake,
are fighting against a human survival mechanism that gets stronger the more the body is
deprived. Studies show that when dieters that lose weight too rapidly, their daily ghrelin
levels increased by as much as 24%. That's why most crash dieters gain back their weight -
and more - when they abandon the crash diet.
Bowles uses hypnotherapy to assist weight loss clients in understanding that diet does not
mean deprivation, but refers to the food we eat each day and that a balanced diet and
increased physical activity is a healthier way to handle the battle of the bulge.
"The most amazing thing," Bowles says, "Is the increased self respect people discover
when they slowly lose weight - and keep it off."
