Posted by JaniceB @ 03:46 AM CST Monday, November 15, 2004 You know how it is when sometimes you do the daftest of things, or when you make those little mistakes that cause you feel such a fool? Your inner chatter then goes on and on and on until you're virtually driven insane by the mundaneness of it's content. Well the following made me chuckle and is reminder to make light of such occasions. Perhaps you can apply it to something you consider total muppetry that you've done recently and instead of fretting, will make you smile:
"The sages do not consider that making no mistakes is a blessing. They believe, rather, that the great virtue of man lies in his ability to correct his mistakes and continually make a new man of himself." ....and to be politically correct, change gender where appropriate!

Friday, June 25, 2004 You may read the following through to yourself severaltimes until you remember the process or you may record it onto a tape. 1. Either lie down or find a comfortable chair - make sure your lower back is supported, your arms resting either by your side or gently in your lap and uncross your legs. 2. Take a deep breath, filling your lungs completely, then hold for a moment before breathing out. Gently allow your eyes to close………. 3. Focus for a moment upon your breathing - a slow and gentle rhythm and become aware of your chest rising and falling with each breath. 4. Now take another slow and gentle breath in…. hold it for a moment…then breathe out, and with each breath out, feel your body sinking deeper and deeper into your chair as you say to yourself ‘ONE’. 5. Take another deep breath and as you breathe out say the word ‘TWO’. With each number you’ll feel your limbs relaxing even more. 6. Repeat this 3 more times counting ‘THREE’, ‘FOUR’ and ‘FIVE’ on each breath out. Then just breathe normally at your own rhythm. 8. Now do a mental scan of your body; notice any parts of your body that might feel tense or tight. Each time you breathe out ‘talk’ to that part saying ‘RELAX’, ‘LET GO’. Repeat this until you feel completely relaxed. 9. Mentally ask yourself “How many minutes do I need?” You’ll get a number pop up in your mind, accept that and tell yourself that you’ll automatically ‘awaken’ when the time is up (remember this isn’t sleep). 10. Imagine now an energy field around your body. See it as a colour if you wish – feel its power energizing you. Whatever your mind or body needs, the energy field will give you, feel it working upon the cells of your body. When you are ready, you’ll suddenly be aware of the need to open your eyes. If you wish you may count from ‘FIVE’ to ‘ONE’ knowing that on the count of one your eyes will open and you’ll feel RELAXED and ENERGIZED.

Thursday, April 15, 2004 Many of the techniques used with self-hypnosis require a certain amount of visualization yet this can be a real stumbling block for some people. The fact is we all do! Your brain is constantly flashing images as thoughts pass through your mind. When a more significant event occurs, your brain can be quite detailed about what it records. It’s thought these images are recorded in a sequence of ‘frames’ much like a roll of film. When a client tells me they can’t visualize I don’t make a big deal of it, I just suggest that they get a ‘feeling’ instead. Once in hypnosis, they’ll often begin recounting pictures quite vividly. This is because the hypnotic state causes you to feel so very relaxed that you become quite unconcerned about things. Providing the environment is one that you feel safe in, you’ll let go of any anxieties and ‘go with the flow’. But what about when you’re practising on your own and you don’t have the guidance of a therapist with you? You may find that creating pictures in your mind are not so forthcoming. If consciously visualizing is new to you, it can take a bit of practise to perfect so that when the time comes you find it easy to bring an image into your minds-eye. Spending a couple of minutes here and there to practise, will allow your self-hypnosis session to flow easily and effortlessly. So over the next 2 weeks, start to really observe objects around you. Notice the details such as the texture, shades of colour and depth. Then close your eyes and ‘see’ how well you can see that image in your mind’s eye. Repeat the exercise as often as you can, perhaps choosing the same object for a day or two and then with as many varied objects as you can. You’ll be amazed at how you’ll soon start to observe more generally. Over time this helps to develop your intuition as well, which is an extremely useful ability you’ll learn to apply in many ways. Finally, as you practise, you’ll notice that observing an object becomes very relaxing. You may notice that your breathing slows down -- perhaps you even take a deeper breath every now and then. Try repeating the word ‘CALM’ as you take in all the details of your chosen object -- this practise by itself will bring you a moment of peace and relaxation during your day! Janice Bowles.
