Hypnotism is Making Headlines!
As more and more people are starting to realize, hypnosis works.
- 1955: The British Medical Association announced support and endorsement for the
therapeutic use of hypnosis in medicine.
- 1958: The American Medical Association, following suit, also announced support
for the therapeutic use of hypnosis.
- Harvard Medical School's Carol Ginandes and Patricia Brooks of the Union Institute
in Cincinnati headed up a team of researchers to determine if hypnosis could speed healing
and recovery. The results, released in 1999, stood out like a sore ankle.
Those who were hypnotized healed faster than those who were not.

- Hypnosis alters the brain: Subjects see color where none exists (2000)
"People have been hypnotized to see color where only shades of gray exist."
No carnival side show, that result comes from a tightly controlled scientific
experiment at a Harvard University medical facility.
"What we have shown for the first time," Kosslyn concludes, "is that hypnosis
changes conscious experience in a way not possible when we are not under hypnosis."
- American Journal of Psychiatry
A 2000 study in The American Journal of Psychiatry revealed that when hypnotized
subjects were told a black-and-white picture was in color, their brain activity was
consistent with seeing colors. Other studies indicated brain activity congruent with
ability to hear noises when there were none, or not feeling pain when subjects' hands
were submerged in painfully hot or cold water.
- Harvard Health Publications, June 2002
The efficiency of hypnosis in treating stress and pain is no longer in doubt.
Positron emission tomography (PET) scans of hypnotized subjects show that pain
perception is correlated with changes in blood flow to the anterior cingulate gyrus;
the part of the brain involved in the control of attention and the relationship of
emotions to perceptions.

- December, 2003; BBC News.
Professor David Spiegel, of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Sciences at
Stanford University, said hypnosis had been shown to help patients deal with pain.
Professor Spiegel said: "hypnosis is a safe and effective way to teach people how to
manage their own response, how to take the edge off their pain, how to think through
their anxiety and not let it overwhelm them."

- Dateline, NBC: January 2004
One year ago, Dateline met six members of the class of '78 who wanted to lose
weight before their 25th reunion. Each was given a radically different
weight loss plan.
Two months in, the man who originally couldn't get into his varsity jacket, now can't
be held back. Religiously he listens to his tapes of his hypnotist. After three months
under hypnosis, his wife had a nickname for him. "Droopy drawers" had lost the most so
far, a staggering 40 pounds.
